I have really bad itchy skin. Not only my stomach, but my arms, legs, and feet as well. I use Suave Advanced Therapy with multi-vitamins and glycerin but it doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions on what kind of lotion I could use?
Severe itching!?
if you are in your 3rd trimester and don't have any bumps (or if you have scratched your skin so hard that it looks like you have a rash), go to your doctor ASAP. You could have a liver problem called cholestasis. This is rare, but potentially serious. They thought I had it, but tests came back negative, so they just diagnosed me with pruritis gravidum (or, itchy pregnancy which meant that they didn't know what caused it). They prescribed me different medications and gave me a list of things to help that never did. Some women, like me, just have a reaction to the increase in estrogen and there is not much you can do about it except cool showers.
Reply:I had the same problem and I used extra virgin olive oil and it helped more than anything else I tried. Even that itchy skin spray.
Reply:Aveeno oatmeal baths ... try not to scratch, I know it's hard but the scratching will make it worse.
You should also try cocca butter lotion, the stuff they reccommend for stretch marks.
Mention this to your doctor so that they can rule out anything serious.
Good luck!
Reply:it is very common as your belly is getting bigger, you just need to keep it lotioned daily or whenever you need it so your belly doesnt get dry skin.
Dont worry, it happens to tons of people
Good Luck!
Reply:Aveeno products worked for me. There are prescription antihistamines that will stop itching in its tracks but I don't know if they would be safe if pregnant. The drug names are periacton and hydroxyzine. u could ask the doctor if the aveeno doesn't work. congratulations
Reply:Cocoa butter makes it worse for most people. And don't do the baby oil on the skin thing...it clogs the pores and makes the itching start to burn! The best thing my sister in laws and I have found is the Aveeno bath stuff and avoiding the warmer showers. Warm water really drys out the skin and makes the itchiness worse. If you have bumps or swelling in the area though - go to the doctor - it could be a sign of something serious.
Reply:The oatmeal baths worked really well for me. The thing that really did it though was avacado oil. My m-i-l gave it to me, and that was a savior! It also prevents stretch marks.
Reply:It is NOT NORMAL and it could be DANGEROUS for your baby.
This answer is also for those answering this question that are also itching with out a rash .
Cholestasis of Pregnancy
The only rash like symptom you may have is where you have scratched so much that you make your skin bleed.
IT IS NOT AS RARE AS PEOPLE THINK
Itching during pregnancy especially in the 3rd trimester,
There is a risk to your baby, STILL BIRTH if delivered later than 37 weeks, ICP/OC carries and increased risk of premature labor, fetal and maternal hemorrhaging, fetal distress, and most importantly, stillbirth.
Please visit and READ Information at
www.itchymoms.com
or
Search the web for Cholestasis of Pregnancy or ICP
There is also a news report at www.wkyc.com and clink on the "Itchy Moms" story
Itching can be more dangerous than you think during pregnancy.
I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE...........
Not all doctors a familiar with Obstetric Cholestasis.
If you go to www.itchymoms.com you will see that most doctors will just brush it aside as a hormonal itch but the result of those pregnancies end up with a sad ending.
I believe it is better to be safe than sorry!!!!!!!!
Go straight to your DR and ask about Cholestasis of Pregnancy or ICP.
It is to do with your liver and pregnancy hormones.
I have had this with 3 of my 4 pregnancies.
All it is, is a simple itch that will drive you crazy that is the only symptom.
Ask to have your Serum Bile Acid Test (SBA)
tested this is the only test that will diagnose OC/ICP, it is a specialized test that can take a week or longer to get back.
The results may come back Normal but if the itching persists you need to be tested again as the symptoms can show up 15 weeks before the blood test diagnose ICP/OC.
Argue with your Dr if you have to, it is worth it.
Liver function tests (LFT) and blood counts DO NOT diagnose OC/ICP the only can help the diagnoses in conjunction with Bile salt tests .
An itch doesn't seem much but it can be FATAL to your baby if it goes undiagnosed.
The itching can be any where, I had it on my legs and arms at first.
I don't want to scare you but please realize this is very important
pregnancy #4 I started to itch at week 8
Reply:Aloe vera gel, apple cider vinegar or vitamin E oil can
be effectively used on the affected skin. More cheap and natural remedies for itching at http://www.wellnesstalk.org/itching.html
