Has anyone used these products for their dogs?
What are your opinions on them?
I have a five month old chihuahua puppy and he has super dry itchy skin...
I've been thinking about changing him to Natural Balance Food but I'm not sure which (ingredients) would be best...there are like three or four different formulas
After reading the labels, I see a lot of the formulas have salmon oil or flaxseed...I'm worried that he will be getting too many fatty acids if I feed him this food plus the supplement...
Should I switch him or not, right now he is on science diet, but I've been hearing very bad things about it....
Honestly, i feel bad for my lil guy who seems to be itching and scratching all the time...I just wanna do whats best for him
Any advice on either product or anything different would be greatly appreciated by my puppy...
~Thanks~
Linatone Plus %26amp; Natural Balance Food?
The Natural Balance Ultra Premium for all life stages (I think that it is the blue bag) is a very very good food, and you probably will not need the Linatone after you start feeding it. I switched one of my dogs to it a long time ago and her coat is absolutely beautiful plus she hasn't had any skin problems since.
Science Diet is not a good brand of food, you are really just purchasing the name when you buy it (same with Iams and Eukanuba). I would switch him asap, but switch him slowly over a weeks time or else you will upset his stomach. You cannot give too many fatty acids, but you can make them fat because of them. You may want to put him on the Linatone for a few weeks to give the Natural Balance's superior formula to kick in. It will probably take at least 6 weeks for his skin to improve, but you may notice in just a few days.
Reply:We raise chihuahuas. We just the last few months switched to Nutro Natural choice for our adult dogs and Nutro ultra puppy for the little ones. It has really improved their coats and skins. They say right on the bag that it is guaranteed to do so. It is a good quality food, available in pet stores and farm supply stores.
Reply:Try switching to Avoderm dog food, chicken flavor. I currently changed my dogs diet over to that, cause I've talked to an Avoderm rep who suggested that changing to Avoderm would help my dog with the same issue of really bad itchy skin. Avoderm is different from other dog foods, because of Avacado being one of the main ingriedients. But also, try taking your dog to the vet to have their skin checked out, cause your dog could also maybe have a skin infection.
Reply:Be sure, first of all, to have a thorough physical exam done on your puppy to rule out any other problems with his skin, if you haven't already. There are many things other than food or dry skin that can cause puppies to be itchy.
I have a German shepherd with allergies. Natural Balance Venison and Brown Rice has been a Godsend for him. I've had him on it for several years. Personally, I have tried all the prescription diets we have at work, and he has done better on the Natural Balance than with any of them. I have tried Hills D/D and Z/D and Royal Canin (formerly IVD and Select Care) Duck and Potato and Venison and Potato prescription diets. This may not be the case with all dogs, of course. The fact that Natural Balance contains no by products or artificial additives is a huge plus, in my opinion. Our vets have also recommended Natural Balance to their clients. I also use a supplement called 3V Caps, an Omega 3 fatty acid supplement. It's available over the counter in capsule or liquid form. My vets have recommended a higher dose of this supplement, which I would never ever do without consulting them. Any supplement of this type can cause major diarrhea.
Natural Balance is an excellent food. If you switch, do it gradually over a week or more. I would consult your vet about which would be the best supplement to use, especially since you have such a little guy.
