Has anyone been prescribed beta blockers in the last week of pregnancy for high blood pressure?

It's my daughter who is expecting her first baby.

She's also had protein in her urine, swollen ankles and itchy skin.

Has anyone been prescribed beta blockers in the last week of pregnancy for high blood pressure?
OK, Anyanswer. I'm sorry but am behind answering questions, today. My answers may be out of sequence to your questions.

It sounds as though she is suffering from either preeclampsia or PIH, (Pregnancy Induced Hypertension).

Beta blockers are used to reduce blood pressure. They generally work by blocking the effects of the hormone epinephrine (adrenaline).

They are prescribed to help the heart to beat more slowly and with less force. This lowers the blood pressure. They basically dilate the veins allowing the blood to flow more freely.

Bottom line is beta blockers relax the vessels. Which takes the workload off the heart, to an extent.

Protein in the urine (proteinuria), as well as swollen ankles/feet, are very much associated with preeclampsia.

But, to answer your question, I have been prescribed a beta blocker for post partum hypertension. I, personally, did not respond well to the particular one I was prescribed. But, keep in mind, everyone responds differently. I am sure they are monitoring her pulse rate, along with her other vitals signs very closely.
Reply:I would have thought that the more sensible option would be to induce her at this late stage?
Reply:Yes it is because of pre clampsia which causes all these symptoms, like me she will probably have to keep taking them a week or two after delivery so he blood pressure goes back to normal.
Reply:This really doesn't sound good to me,who prescribed them?

I would firstly get in touch with her maternity unit,if it's them who prescribed them I would phone NHS direct,do anything you can to find out if this is normal, don't give up until you do.

It very much sounds like pre-eclampsia,but it may just be slightly raised, its the swollen ankles that concern me more, and the itchy skin can be a sign that somethings wrong with her liver.

Please let us know the outcome,I dont want to frighten you,but better safe than sorry.
Reply:no hun, never got that far, i got pre-eclampsia at 7 months and pregnancy ended there, but she need to be very very careful hun, as it can cause a lot of problems, am surprised she is not in hosp, where they can keep an eye on her

Just let us know when the new Baby arrives ♥

Ok i just want to clarify something !?

who seems to think what i am describing is a yest infection rather than possibly being prego. i feel sick to my stomach, headaches, itchy skin, i have pain in the abdomen area. light headed and most of all i am so tired!! now i spoke to my nurse at the doctors office she said...very possible i am prego but test to early to show that i can come in for a consultation. now all the websites that i have been directed to ..these all are symptoms of pregnancy. now i rarly actually can't even remember if i have ever had a yeast infection. so i don't think that is the issue. i felt fine before we started to try which was may7th. i just started feeling this was the last couple of days. advice?? thanks again

Ok i just want to clarify something !?
There may be other symptoms of pregnancy but these were mine. Sore breasts... that was it at first. Other people feel or are sick and this can make them tired. I wasn't tired in the beginning because, although you're body is changing, that little something inside is minute. You could feel light headed also.

It doesn't sound like a yeast infection though. The symptom of that is mainly itchiness. This seems to affect your whole body.

A pregnancy test can be done very early but I'd wait for 2 weeks to be sure.

I'm probably not much help but, good luck.
Reply:best thing to do is to visit a doc. so we don't give you wrong ideas.
Reply:I have had a yeast infection before and that deffinitly does NOT sound like one, it sounds like you are pregnant
Reply:ok its very possible but it normaly takes a month for symptoms to occur buy a home test early test and see may be to early
Reply:Well I didn't see your symptoms on the other post, but I am pregnant and have a yeast infection..those signs are also related to both. Yeast infections can make your itchy even on your stomach, tired, light headed, and sick, but it also could mean you are pregnant with a yeast infection...pregnancy is soo difficult...haha..it is always throwing you for loops. I would wait until your next period arrives or doesn;t then go back to your Dr. They can do a blood test that is most accurate. GOOD LUCK
Reply:You could be pregnant, but you could have any kind of infection that has the symptoms you're describing.

Go and see a doctor and don't be fobbed off :O) Good Luck
Reply:Honestly i think u are pregnant.
Reply:Ok Me again..lol, your probably sick of hearing my input. But that doesnt sound like a yeast infection, because what you described has happened to me before. I wasnt pregnant, but it happened and It never was a yeast infection. I am not preggo by the way, I started:( Oh well try and try again. Good Luck
Reply:Well, I think you may have a slight infection maybe a urine infection...But its best for you to have a test done to clarify.

I know its stressful waiting to have a pregnancy test but unfortunately, it will not show anything until the time is right. Thus your body produces homones which will show in your blood if you were pregnant but unfortunately it takes a few weeks to show.

You should try and have a urine test for infections whilst you wait just to rule that out...I hope you find out what's causing the discomfort..Good Luck
Reply:definitely not a yeast infection.

Constant headache, fatigued, always cold, everything aches, vision blurs in and out?

No ambition, dizziness, extremely dry itchy skin and having spells where it's hard to breathe. Went to doctor and they said a week for blood work to come back.

Any idea what this could be?? It's being going on for a while now.

Constant headache, fatigued, always cold, everything aches, vision blurs in and out?
Take care of yourself hunny especially the vision. I am an ER nurse I say go to the doctor immediately. Get a full CT done of the head.
Reply:It sounds like you have a number of things wrong with you based on simply not taking care of yourself. Get more rest, eat healthier foods, reduce stress...
Reply:Could be chronic fatique syndrome! Your working too hard! Slow down!
Reply:lupus
Reply:No clue, but do take care of yourself! Hope you feel better soon.
Reply:It sounds like hypothyroidism. Low levels of certain types of hormones can certainly cause this. If it is really bad and you are feeling sick, call your doctor back so that you can be treated ASAP. You should not have to wait for answers if you are extremely ill.
Reply:migraine
Reply:Have you tried seeing a doctor?
Reply:Could be rabbititis. I heard of a guy named Fudd getting it once...Are you seeing spots before your eyes?
Reply:Sounds like depression, it not only affects your emotions but your health as well if left untreated.
Reply:This really does sound like ME, I have it too and it was years before the doctor would listen to me. Go back and make them listen, you'll be surprised how quickly they take notice when you're willing to answer back.

Good luck Hun.
Reply:C F S ----cronic fratigue syndrome, just wait for your blood work, best of luck, don't stress!!!!
Reply:Allergies could do some of that. There is no telling what it could be, since so many things have similar symptoms.
Reply:Headaches can be classified as either secondary (caused by other factors, such as head injury or infection) or primary (not caused by an underlying condition). Secondary headaches include those related to head injury, low cerebrospinal fluid, exertion, headache medicines (e.g., analgesic rebound) or exposure to carbon monoxide or alcohol.

Primary headaches include migraines, cluster headaches and tension headaches. Types of migraines include migraine with aura, migraine without aura, complicated migraine, basilar artery migraine, cyclic migraine syndrome, hemiplegic migraine, menstrual migraine and migraine equivalent (e.g., abdominal migraine). Primary headaches are often linked with other factors, such as diet, light sensitivity and depression
Reply:plz go for PNS X-RAY ,WITH THAT CONSULT ENT DOCTOR FOR FURTHER TRETMENT.
Reply:well, if i had to take a guess i would say thyroid problem, stress, perhaps metabolic syndrome or insulin resistance.
Reply:Well - not to rag on the Western world and western medicine too much - but - man, blood work - one week?? I live in a third world country and went for a routine heart check-up and the blood work was back in 1 hour.. no joke - you guys are accepting far too much slack.. hope you feel better but it sounds to me like stress of life is weighing heavy and there are choices - don't ever forget, you have choices..

Can dermatitis be stress related?

i have very flacky and itchy skin on my hands

Can dermatitis be stress related?
Absolutely!! I'd estimate that 90% of cases I see have been stress related - only a very small minority are truely exposure to irritants in isolation.
Reply:I know psoriasis can, not sure about dermatitis. I'd say it's more likely to be due to gloves, cream, soap etc.
Reply:Yes my husband gets it when stressed.
Reply:yes, anyone i know with it always get bad break outs when they are stressed out
Reply:Eczema, an atopic dermatitis, is often associated with allergies, asthma, and stress.
Reply:Yes, I'm living proof
Reply:yep it can be i find if im stressed then my arms and scalp itch its wierd
Reply:Indeed it can trigger eczema or dermatitis! Stress is the main cause of many health problems these days.. from skin and hair complaints to the more serious ones like heart disease and high blood pressure.
Reply:I own a holistic (chemical free) spa in GA. I am an esthetician of 13 years and I specialze in natural skin care. Ihave done a lot of research into Skin Conditions including eczema.

I'm willing to bet that you have food allergies.

Eczema is an autoimmune disease - meaning the immune system is overactive. In other words, it is an allergic disease, and such diseases are escalating world-wide, due to the ways in which we are polluting our environment When the immune system fails to recognize “itself” as friendly it mounts an attack on itself." You eczema is a direct result of your body not being able to process food properly. If you were to get a flu and not be able to eat for a day or to, you may even see an improvement in the eczema.

Cortisone creams, ointments, and lotions commonly prescribed for skin disease may clear the skin temporarily and control the condition in many patients. Side effects from steroids include thinning of the skin, dilated blood vessels, bruising, and skin color changes. Treatments that are recommended by doctors and pharmaceutical companies worldwide amounts to futile attempts at mere symptom treatment, instead of the trying to address the root causes of the condition. Symptoms you see on the skin express the body's attempt to heal, but are not the cause of disease.

Over the counter creams and ointments aren't any better. They all contain fillers and chemicals that can irritate the condition even more.

Now you can't go on eating nothing. I recommend seeing an Allergy Specialist. See if you can find anyone that knows about EPD. Enzyme Potentiated Desensitisation is a form of Immunotherapy developed in the 1960s and now used world-wide. It has the potential to desensitise anyone to the allergens to which they are allergic. This includes foods, dust, animals, birds, grasses, pollens, moulds, and many chemicals. An ultra-low dose of allergen is used - approximately 1/1000 part of a routine skin-prick test - combined with the natural enzyme beta-glucuronidase which enhances, or potentiates the desensitisation process (thus we get the rather curious name). It is particularly effective for the treatment of eczema, and will work quickly for children - the younger the child the quicker it will work. It takes about 2-5 years to be effective for an adult.

Until then cut out things like high fat foods (no McDonalds), dairy, frozen premade foods, pre packaged foods and sugar. All of these things cotain chemicals and preservatives that his little body just can't handle. A good diet of fresh or frozen veggies and protien(chicken and beef), and fruit will clear him up very well.

For treating the surface eczema try using Aloe juice or even the gel directly from the plant. Aloe works in your skin in 4 ways:

1.) It Penetrates. It actually sinks down into the lower layers of the skin (dermis) where your collagen is. Healing the skin where it is created

2.) It Exfoliates, Aloe is a natural exfoliator, the plant enzymes actually break down the soap and residue

that hold dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. Dead skin cells make your skin look flaky, dry and dull. Aloe does it naturally without scrubs or chemicals.

3.) Aloe Regenerates- Aloe regenerates skin 11 times faster than you body does naturally. That's why aloe is often used on burns. If you have scars, sun spots, wrinkles or any other skin damage, aloe can help heal it fast!

4) Aloe is a Natural Anti- inflamitory - Aloe cleanses, removes impurities, and shrinks and tightens pores all at once.

Honey is also realy god for irritated skin, it has a natural anti inflamitory as well.

Find a good botanical oil to use as a moisture like avocado oil , and don't waste your money on anything over the counter.
Reply:Absolutely. Gold Bond lotion is wonderful and made for this kind of issue. It's gentle and yet very effective.
Reply:It is more likely to be a contact dermatitis. Historically stress has been said to increase the exacerbations of a number of conditions, including dermatitis, it is however quite difficult to prove if this is actually true or not.
Reply:No

Dermatitis is caused when there is not enough moisture in your skin and it causes flaky skin, you need a good moisturising lotion. if it gets to bad you will have to go to the doctors for cream you dont want a skin infection.

i work in a kitchen and my hands are water a lot and the heat drys my skin and i do suffer from dermatitis

I got married a month back and i ve been havin sex continually since then, (i was a virgin before)?

I got married a month back and i ve been havin sex continually since then, (i was a virgin before)?
• 10. Tender, swollen breasts

• 9. Fatigue

• 8. Implantation bleeding

• 7. Nausea or vomiting

• 6. Increased sensitivity to odors

• 5. Abdominal bloating

• 4. Frequent urination

• 3. A missed period

• 2. Your basal body temperature stays high

• 1. The proof: A positive home pregnancy test
Reply:sounds like you could be...don't worry, just take care until you test...the nausea and no appetite seem part of the symptoms, but you may not be...don't worry...

if you are, congratulations...
Reply:yeah they are some pregnancy symptoms. definately don't take a test yet because even the ones that say that they predict 5 days sooner, i have never had any luck with them. well congratulations if you are. hope that everything works out well.
Reply:Doctor... go.
Reply:Some of them might be. I did my pregnancy test before my period was due! I think it was 3 days before my period and it was positive! Good luck!
Reply:quite possibly. if your breasts hurt i would say get an early pregnancy test for sure...good luck!
Reply:SOME ARE SOME ARE NOT. YOU NEED TO JUST WAIT AND IF YOU MISS TEST!
Reply:Sounds like PMS to me. It's only 4 days away. Wait it out.
Reply:Sounds like you are pregnant. I had all those symptoms .

Go to the doctor. They can go a blood test that can tell if you are, right now.
Reply:Well, first off, contratulations.

I would say just wait until about a week after your start date. I say a week because the new "activities" could throw your cycle off a bit.
Reply:yes they very well could by symptoms but i wouldnt worry too much untill your missed period
Reply:Have you been using contraception at all? If not, then yes you could be pregnant...but I think it's just allergies or that you're sick. But if you're still restless, but a 2 pack of a pregnancy test %26amp; take 1 now...if it's negative %26amp; you're late...take another.
Reply:You may have picked the wrong "PRINCEcharming" to give your perfect nature to. Too bad, me and you could have done a lot more better.
Reply:Woah, that is quite a list... you know what I would honestly suggest? I know your period is not due for another four days, but they have tests out there that can predict pregnancy five days before your period... so I would honestly advise you to take one. The more you stress about the fact that you might be pregnant, the more itchy skin, allergies, cramping and pain will become apparent to you... believe me, just take a test and go from there. Good luck.
Reply:Sounds more like allergies!!
Reply:I could not help but laugh a little as I read this. It sounds almost EXACTLY like me! My husband and I got pregnant 7 weeks after we got married (both virgins when we did). It could be pregnancy, as a lot of those are early symptoms. Though, my breasts were one of the first signs I had (they hurt like never before and looked bruised). I was 3 days before my period was due when I got my first symptoms, and I only waited until I was 4 days past due to get a test (I went to a doctor, but an over the counter test should work if you're already having symptoms). If you do decide to take a test over the counter and get a negative result, and still have those symptoms, I would suggest going to your OBGYN (or family doctor) to confirm. Best of luck, and congratulations on your marriage (and possible little one!)!
Reply:If you are late for your period, then you need to see a doctor.
Reply:Doesn't honestly sound like pregnancy to me....skin allergies aren't a likely symptom at all. cramps and backache would come later in pregnancy anyway. Sounds to me as if your body is adjusting to the new routine of married life and a lot more time spent in bed! There are outside possibilities, like you are allergic to your husband's soap or aftershave, or the condoms if you're using them - some women have even been allergic to their husband's sperm! But if you're sharing a new bed in a new home with your partner, that'll explain the backache and the headache too and maybe even the allergies. If you're worried, some of the new early-response pregnancy test kits are extremely sensitive and can be used 3 days before your period is due. Ask your pharmacist. Good luck!
Reply:Some of them are some of them aren't text book symptoms. But one thing you should always remember about medical anythng not everything goes by text book! Did you use protecton? If not then yes you could be. Some people don't even notice they are pregnant till they miss their 1st period. If you want you could get 1st Response from the store this is a test that will work before your missed period. Or you can wait it out and take the test after you 1st period. Either way good luck! I hope everything goes the way you would like it too.
Reply:First of all, congrats on the marriage, and congrats on waiting for marriage to have sex. I wish I had! Honestly, that sounds more like an allergy, maybe to latex if you guys are using condoms. If your period is late or skipped take a test, but either way go to a gyno to double check the results.

Could i have celiac disease?

i had this intenstinal problem that almost killed me when i was 3. i really dont remember too much about that (im going to find out more details from my parents) but my entire life, my stomach has always hurt, especially in the morning, to the point where i would get extremely nauseas, and that nausea problem has been this way for at least 3 years. I also had anemia about 2 yrs ago.

Recently, My....*cough* bowel movements have been weird and sort of fitting the description that i saw on this celiac disease website. I'm sort of freaking out cuz a lot of the symptoms, i recognize in myself. Like the weird itchy skin rash with open-like sores.

My parents dont have celiac disease...but idk what the hell could be wrong with me!

Could i have celiac disease?
Ditto. Gluten is mainly in four foods, wheat, oats, barley, and rye. Try taking these out of your diet for a week and see if you feel better. If you do, then learn to eat low gluten or gluten free. There is a celiac blood test, but the prob is that many people will test negative but still just not digest gluten well. That's where you need to say, "thank you, doctor..., " but use common sense; if you feel better when you don't eat gluten, who cares what the test says?

If you ball up a piece of bread, you'll notice it gets rubbery and sticks together. Corn, rice, potatoes, etc do not do this. This is because of the gluten in the bread. Well, what do you think gluten does in your stomach? It is like a rubbery ball. It is the most difficult vegetable protien for humans to digest. Some people don't make a lot of the enzyme that breaks this protien down, especially some white people. If you don't make a lot of this enzyme, you very well may test negative on a celiac test, but not feel well everytime you eat food with a lot of gluten. It's not a disease or a genetic defect, you just need to learn how to eat what's right for your body. Good luck.

PS. There are about a million other things that could cause stomach pains. If you make this diet change and feel little difference, scratch gluten off your list and keep looking.
Reply:ew Report It

Reply:I'm no doctor - so I would suggest that you go see one over taking my advice. You could switch to a gluten free diet for a couple of weeks and see if you notice any changes. Keep a food log diary, and note down any pains, consistency of BM's etc.

I hope you feel better!

Is it due to low thyroxin level?

I am a male aged 55. I am not diabitic and take losataren potassium 50 mg /day to control my blood preassure. Drink alcohol (33.4% strength) 200 ml before dinner.I have beeen experiencing, a muscle pain all over the body, sleepiness, pain in some joints when moving and itchy skin in some places, especially on the back for more than 2 weeks. A physian who known to me and knows that I am drinking alcohol, suggested it was due to some drug reaction with alcohol and advised me to stop drinking alcohol. Even two days after stoping alcohol completely I experienced the same symptoms. Consulted another specialist physcian, she tentatively diagnosed the condition as low blood tyyroxin level and prescribed Thyroxin 50 microgram, Cetrim 10 mg (anti histamine) both 1 tab a day for 2 weeks. And also prescribed sustid soap (antifungal soap) Asked to do Hb/PCV, FT4TSH and S.alkalinephosphatase and to see her in 2 weeks. Can anyone suggest what this condition is?

Is it due to low thyroxin level?
hypothyroidism, go to a different doc they should be putting you through blood work to check your thyroid and see if there is an underlying problem- go to a different doc
Reply:Roxine level SHOULD not cause the itching, but

a drug interaction with the liver will. Have you had unexplained weight gain-frequently cold when others are not, hair loss(not male pattern baldness) thin skin that bruises easily-if not it is probably not a thyroid condition- the itching should STOP if you STOP alcohol. sound like allergic reaction, but also could be a thyroid malfunction that can return to normal if you stop drinking or minimize it.

Stay in tough with you Doctor-does not sound serious but a complete CBC, Liver Panel etc.... should be done -in my opinion.
Reply:Muscle and joint aches are a symptom of being hypothroid. The fatigue is also a symptom. Your doctors agrees as she put you on thyroid medication. What you need to watch is your thyroid levels. The TSH in the morning should e around 1.0. Make sure you get it there. If after it being at 1.0 for many months you still have the symptoms, then you may need both T4 and T4. You are currently on T4. It's the T3 that often helps to relieve the muscle and joint aches. I started out on T4 and it did nothing for my symptoms. Now on Armour thyroid with my doctor adjusting the dose by Free T4 and Free T3, I no longer have the pains.

Below are some thyroid websites. good luck.
