Amoxicillin allergy?

I have been taking amoxicillin for 4 days for a mild sinus infection. Over the last couple of days I have had itchy skin and a lump in my throat. Also I think I may have oral thrush as I have a sore tongue and the corners of my mouth are inflammed. I am seeing my GP Thursday. Should I continue to take the antibiotics?

I would stop taking them right away. You may have a penicillin allergy- which is very common. Call your doctor or pharmacy right now!!
Reply:I would ask your doctor before you quit taking it. But it sounds like a reaction to the meds. See a doctor ASAP.
Reply:Well why not phone up the surgery and ask. I have the same with this but mine is full blown allergy yours sounds more like a sensitivity

If you had a full blown allergy to this medication you would be hospital...... no you have side effects and you ought to contact your doctor before stopping it...not unless you feel really ill.
Reply:personally i wouldnt,read the insert that came with the tablets for side effectsand appropriate action to takew if side effects occur.as you may be allergic then contact your gp surgery and explain and im sure they will see you sooner than later.
Reply:Best to give NHS24 a call. They can advise you as to whether you should stop the antibiotics or not.





I took the same drug, and I did feel a little awful on it for the first few days. But it sorted itself out and I completed the course without breaking the regular dosage. But if you are having an allergic reaction best to get medical advice.

Reply:If you were going to have a real problem with allergy it would've happened sooner and much more severe.

Reply:Well, you might be getting too strong of a dose, and it really does sound like an allergic reaction of a sort. I once had one and I broke out in plate sized welts all over me...it was horrible..I don't think you have thrush, and if you do, he will just give you nystatin for that. When you are through with your antibiotics, please don't forget to take your acidophilis, get the billion type, and eat yogurt, to put the good bacteria back into your system...I think you need to ask the doctor, if you should stop,,.....we wouldn't want you to get sicker!
Reply:A few years ago, I was in hospital with pneumonia and so was being pumped with antibiotics. I had exactly the same symptoms as you, and it was simply oral thrush which was cleared up with some medicine.


My son however is allergic to amoxicillin. Apparenly the first time you have it it doesn't affect you. It will be only on the second time of you taking amoxicillin that you will react. He came up in a rash all over his body that looked like scarlet fever or measles.


I think, as I am not a health proffessional that you should see your doctor (or any doctor) and ask them whether you should continue taking the antibiotics.
Reply:Amoxicillin reacts like that if you have mono. It sounds like you may have some symptoms of mono - by "lump" do you think your throat/glands are swollen? The doctor thought I had a sinus infection at first because I had a stuffed nose and my eyelids were puffy(which is also a symptom of mono), and so he prescribed Amoxicillin, and then I had a terribly itchy reaction.


I went back, and he then tested me for mono, and it was positive.


So go to the doctor ASAP, and stop taking the antibiotics. Even if you don't have mono, it could be an allergic reaction.
Reply:It does sound as if you are allergic, especially with the hives, on the basis that there is no real evidence that antibiotics have ANY significant effect on the outcome of sinusitis, it is safe to stop.





One of the most recent Swiss studies suggested that 75% of patients take 2 weeks to recover from sinusitis with or without antibiotics. ( it is a long illness).

Stop taking these tablets, and tell your Doctor


Amoxicillin are orally administered semi-synthetic penicillins with the same range of action as ampicillin but less likely to cause side-effects.


But they do cause some side-effects, some like you have,


I cannot take this antibiotic they make vomit and dizzy,and I get thrush in my mouth from them,if I ever go into hospital I have this down as a allergy on the wrist band

Reply:Amoxicillin is a type of penicillin. It sounds you are allergic to it. Speak to your doctor about it so he or she can give you another type of antibiotic that doesn't contain penicillin. It will go on your file also if you are allergic to it so they know never to give you that type again. Take the antibiotic until you get a doctor appointment.
