Can I give my puppy flax seed?

My 3 month old Black Lab-Chow Chow mix has flaky, itchy skin (its not fleas, just dryness). I asked the vet if I could give her Omega 3 acids, and he said its fine. I was wondering if I could give her flax seeds (in their raw, natural form). Is this okay?

Can I give my puppy flax seed?
Flax is tolerated by some dogs, not well by others. Most people use flax seed oil rather than the seeds themselves. Most grains need to be well cooked (to mush) or pulverized in a food processor for dogs to digest them well.

I would suggest giving your puppy wild salmon oil in capsules or oil form. (The oil form must be kept refrigerated.) It is usually well tolerated by dogs and it will give your puppy the Omega 3 fatty acids that you are looking for. The reason for using *wild* salmon oil rather than farmed salmon oil is that the Pacific Northwest *farmed* salmon often has high levels of PCBs/mercury. So the wild salmon oil is safer for your puppy.

You could start with about 500 mg of WSO per day. If your puppy's stools get soft, then back off to 500 mg every other day.
Reply:hmm... I'm not sure call or email a vet
