We reccomend them all the time at my vet clinic, and I've seen the results---they seem to work great. But, I never asked how long it takes to see an improvement! I started gving them to my dog on Thursday -- he's started to get itchy %26amp; dry this winter. I won't see my vet again until Tuesday... so I was wondering if anyone knew about how much longer my poor little guy would have dry skin before they start to work :) Thanks!
Has anyone used 3V Capsules (fish oil) for their dog's skin?
Any improvement from a dietary change (either food or supplement) should begin to appear within 3 to 4 weeks.
Reply:Yeah, but now I use Blue Buffalo dog food that has the omegas in the dog food! I saw a significant difference in their skin and fur within two weeks!
Reply:I use a tablespoon of olive oil in my dogs dinner and if the tablets are like mine you could be seeing a change in a week I think
Reply:I use them for my 2 dogs one gets 1 the other gets 2.
For my dogs it seems to take forever to see improvement.
Reply:Give him some more time, it may take up to 4 weeks for improvement. But have you also run labs to make sure there is no underlying medical condition? My dog had dandruff and a dry coat and it turned out to be hypothyroidism. With meds and some fish oil supplements, his skin cleared up in 2 weeks. You can also buy omega oils or fish oil supplements in other forms or brands that are cheaper than the 3v derm caps..Try 1800petmeds or Fosters %26amp; Smith. Also make sure you are not overbathing him because that dries out the natural oils in the fur coat.
Reply:i use omega 3 daily in my cavaliers food. there coats are soft, shinny and no winter dryness or itching.
Reply:I have used them and they were great, but in combination with a good diet for their skin and coat as well as other things I add to their diet like Brewer's Yeast. I am not using them right now because I am using some Fish/flax oil caps which are more economical and work even better, and they were approved by my Vet for use on the dogs. Otherwise I 'd be adding a bit of Norwegian Cod Liver Oil to their diet. That's great, too.
As far as your guys coat, the caps alone may not be enough to stop the winter itch.
Some other things that can help:
When you do bathe your dog, use something with aloe and oatmeal which soothes the skin. I make a homemade shampoo which I refrigerate for a few days and then use. It has Guiness beer, oatmeal (cooked), aloe vera gel, vitamin E, and raw egg yolk blended together with a bit of baby shampoo added. Sure makes their coats shine.
When you see your Vet, let him know the capsule alone aren't stopping his winter itch and ask your Vet for recommendations and about these suggestions.
