I have a pug whom has very itchy skin. I have been giving her fish oil pills, and Brewer's Yeast w/ Garlic. It does not seem to be working she has red spots now where she has licked herself raw. What should I do.
Pug question?
Take her to the vet. She might have a variety of allergies that might require medicine. Good luck!
Reply:Have you taken the dog to the Vet. for a skin exam to make sure the dog does not have mange?
BTW, garlic is toxic for dogs.
Reply:You need to take her to the vet- if nothing is working then she may need to be put on steriods to curb the itching. Have you tried just antihistamines like benadryl?? If not, this will most likely be the first thing your vet goes for, so you may want to try it first. The benadryl dose for a dog is 1 mg/lb. So, for example a 25 lb dog would take 1 adult benadryl. Benadryl is very safe, but can cause drowsiness in some dogs or excitement in others. Either way, Id get your dog checked out... if she has hot spots, they may be infected. Also, fish oil pills help mainly with the condition of the coat, so if she doesnt have dry skin then those wont do anything for the itching. As for the Brewers, I have never heard a vet recommend it for itching, and Ive worked in several practices with many doctors. Good luck
Reply:The following is a small example of the variety of things that can cause what you describe (red, itchy skin causing licking, nibbling, rubbing, etc):
Flea allergy
Food allergy
Environmental allergy (grass, pollen, mold, etc)
Mange
Skin Mites
Ticks
Please see your vet for an exam and guidance for eliminating possible causes so you can discover the true cause. Each of these conditions require very different treatments to resolve.
Reply:The vet must know take him or her their
Reply:Stop giving the brewers yeast. You dog has allergies. Breawers yeast aggravated allergies. Take her to the vet. She needs medication.
