My dog has red itchy skin, I was wondering how often I can give him childrens benadryll? I gave him some last night but can I give it to him every night? It is only 12.5 mg.
How often can I give my dog children's benadryll?
It's OK to give your dog the benadryl, but if this has been going on for a while (more than a week or two), I suggest taking the dog to the vet to discover the cause of the itchy, red skin. It could be a thyroid problem or allergies. In the case of the thyroid, medication is available and is very inexpensive. If there is an allergy, ask the vet to test the dog to determine the sensitivity. If the sensitivity is to food, a holistic veterinary practitioner can advise you on how to make your own "allergen free" food for your dog (in cases of dog food allergies, you'll see a turnaround within a few weeks of a change in diet). Keep up the benadryl to keep him comfortable, and seek vet advice if it keeps up.
Reply:Well in answering your question I will probably receive another nasty e-mail from a person on here named Believer,as she seems to think I don't know how and what to give a pet.You can give your pet the Childrens' benadryll about 1/8 teaspoon every 6 hours, and this info comes directly from my vet.I can assure you I'm well experienced on what to give a pet and what "NOT" to give a pet.
Reply:Help above is exactly correct....sorry HELP that someone is that shallow they feel they have to email you and attack your answers, especially since this community is designed for us to share our knowledge freely. That being said, I give my 2.5 year old Aussie with severely allergic reactions to flea bites benedryl in the morning and early evening, every day. This is also based on a vet's recommendation. My vet said for every 25 pounds you can give your dog 25mg, but make SURE you let your vet know what you are giving your dog...just FYI, I'm sure you already have but I had to suggest it anyway. Good luck!
Reply:I would check with the vet before giving your dog human medication.
Has the dog got fleas that would make him itchy and sore.
